Ask your candidates to support LGBT equality this election

Scotland has come a long way for LGBT equality, but we still have a long way to go. That’s why, in this year’s Scottish Parliament elections, we’re asking voters to contact their candidates and ask them to support our manifesto for LGBT equality.

See full list of candidates who have signed up to our manifesto

How to contact your candidates

You can contact candidates standing in your area through Who Can I Vote For?  - please note that this is an external site and Stonewall Scotland takes no responsibility for the accuracy of the content.

What should I say?

Below is a suggested email to use or adapt, but writing your own will be more effective. If you’ve got a story you want to tell, make sure you share it with the candidates – real experiences can help people understand why these issues matter.

Suggested text:

“Dear X,

Scotland has come a long way for LGBT equality, but we still have a long way to go. As a voter in your constituency and a supporter of LGBT equality, I wanted to ask  you to support Stonewall Scotland’s LGBT Manifesto.  If elected as my MSP, will you commit to:

  • An education system grounded in equality where LGBT young people feel, safe, included and respected

  • Fair treatment for LGBT people in public services

  • Tackling hate crime against LGBT people

  • A review of laws affecting trans people

  • Protecting LGBT rights here and abroad?

I would appreciate it if you could email back and let me know whether you will support Stonewall Scotland’s campaign for LGBT equality.

Thank you for taking the time to read this email – I look forward to hearing from you.”
