Domestic Violence

Introduction

Most of the incidents of domestic disputes reported to the police are related to violence.

The Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) defines domestic violence as "any incident of threatening behaviour, violence or abuse (psychological, physical, sexual, financial or emotional) between adults who are or who have been intimate partners or family members, regardless of gender."

Domestic violence takes places also in same-sex relationships. There is growing recognition of this phenomenon and initiatives to address the issue are being developed.
