About us

Stonewall Scotland was set up in 2000 in response to requests from Stonewall supporters in Scotland. Since then we have been campaigning for equality and justice for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people living in Scotland. We work with businesses, the public sector, the Scottish Executive, the Scottish Parliament and a range of partners to improve the lives of LGBT people in Scotland.

The work we do involves campaigning on, and raising the profile of, LGBT issues; helping to explain new policies and legislation practically to stakeholders; developing public services to invlove LGBT people in Scotland; and working with employers in the private, public and voluntary sector to tackle homophobic discrimination in the workplace.  


Key priorities

Our key priorities are:

  • Homophobic hate crime: in 2006, The Scottish Executive failed to deliver on its previous promise to introduce statutory aggravation on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity, despite the fact that such legislation already exists in England and Wales, and despite the fact that in Scotland, similar protection on the basis of race and religion is in place. We will continue to campaign for Scottish legislation that tackles homophobic and transphobic hate crime.
  • Homophobic bullying in schools: Stonewall Scotland is working hard to raise awareness of the problem of homophobic bullying in schools. We will call on politicians to speak out and take action to address the problem. For more information, click here.
  • Workplace discrimination: We will continue our work with the public, private and voluntary sectors in Scotland; expanding the Scottish Diversity Champions programme, facilitating working environments where lesbian and gay staff can be themselves; and helping organisations and companies understand and comply with employment equality legislation.   • Public services: Our new 'Good Practice' project aims to help public services change their policy and practice toward their LGBT service users.  We are currently working with a variety of public services including councils, police forces and colleges to look at what works and what doesn't and share that learning across the public sector.  For more information, click here.
  • Fair for All - LGBT: In 2007/08, the Stonewall Scotland and NHS Scotland 'Fair for All - LGBT' project (known to many as the 'Health Inclusion Project') will carry on its valuable work to help NHS staff and services become more accessible and wecoming to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender service users.
