What is the Role Models Programme?

Stonewall Scotland, and hundreds of leading employers, understand that people perform better when they can be themselves and at Stonewall Scotland, we know exactly how important role models are to our sense of self. This one day programme, for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender staff at all levels in an organisation, is designed to help you think about what it means to be yourself in the workplace and how you can be a more effective role model. Through the programme we aim to increase the visability and LGBT role models in Scotland's workplaces.

Am I really a role model?

At Stonewall Scotland we know that role models exist in all shapes and sizes, and at all levels within an organisation. If you are out in your workplace you may well be a role model without even knowing!

Stonewall’s latest guide on leadership, Role Models: Sexual Orientation and the Workplace, illustrates the power of positive role models in our work through stories from lesbian, gay and bisexual leaders across a range of  industries. These include MPs alongside people working in both the private and public sector. Stonewall maintains that people perform better when they can be themselvers.

LGBT people know what being inauthentic feels like, often on a daily basis, and know the impact that not being themselves has – socially, organisationally and developmentally in their careers. Despite the  confidence of some prominent lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender business leaders and public servants in being open about their sexual orientation or gender identity, LGBT people remain under-represented at every level in many organisations. Numerous employers are now focusing on the career development and ambitions of their LGBT staff. This one day programme provides a unique opportunity to work with other lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender staff to explore these themes.

Through this programme you will:

  • develop an understanding of what it means to be yourself in the workplace
  • develop an understanding of what it means for you to be an LGBT role model in the workplace
  • be able to identify achievable ways to step up as an LGBT role model in your workplace
