Campaigns

Stonewall Scotland is currently working on the following campaigns and issues:

Education

Stonewall Scotland wants to see more done to tackle homophobia in Scottish schools.  We are part of the Education for All project run by Stonewall and consisting of many LGBT organisations.  For more information click here.

Homophobic hate crime

In 2006, The Scottish Executive failed to deliver on their previous promise to introduce a statutory aggravation on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity, despite the fact that such legislation already exists in England and Wales, and despite the fact that in Scotland, similar protection on the basis of race and religion is in place.

By doing so, the Scottish Executive is sending out the message that Scotland is less concerned about homophobic hate crime than England and Wales, and that homophobic hate crime is seen as less offensive and serious than hate crimes aggravated by race or religion.

We will continue to campaign for Scottish legislation that tackles homophobic and transphobic hate crime. This involves speaking to politicians and journalists about the impact and seriousness of homophobic and transphobic hate crime, and raising awareness of the need for new legislation to tackle the problem.

For more information on the legal situation and what to do if you have been a victim of hate crime, click here.

Have you had an experience of homophobic hate crime, abuse or harassment that you would be willing to share with us and allow us to use in our literature or when we speak to media? Or would you even be willing to talk to journalists about your experience, either anonymously or using your real name?

For more information, please download our case study form, or contact our Communications Officer Christina Stokes on email christina.stokes@stonewallscotland.org.uk or phone 0131 557 3789.

Or if you want to lobby your MSP about homophobic hate crime, a concise letter is a good way to let your MSP know your views. Click here for more information on writing to your MSP.

Hearts and minds

Stonewall Scotland is calling on Scottish politicians and civic leaders to stand up to homophobia and show leadership on LGBT equality. In the recent adoption debate in the Scottish Parliament MSPs from all parties supported the provisions to allow same sex couples to apply to adopt jointly. However, many also argued that catholic adoption agencies should be exempt from these provisions despite providing a publicly funded public service. Since then the Westminster parliament has passed legislation outlawing discrimination in the provision of goods and services on the basis of sexual orientation, including catholic adoption agencies.  We want to see a Scotland where Scottish politicians also stand up to discrimination against LGBT People - wherever it comes from.
