Scottish Parliamentary Election 2007

On the 3rd of May 2007 you had the chance to make your vote count by supporting political parties and candidates who care about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality.

With the Scottish Executive backing down on their promise in 2006 to legislate against homophobic hate crime, and homophobic bullying in schools still going unchallenged, the 2007 election was a crucial opportunity to influence and lobby for change.

Stonewall Scotland's election demands for the election were:

  • Hate crime legislation to stop anti-gay attacks
  • Scottish schools free from homophobia
  • LGBT needs recognised by public services
  • Politicians that stand up to anti-gay hate
  • Our communities represented in Parliament

In the run up to the election, we kept a close eye on what politicians and political parties were sayin in the media, in Parliament, and of course, in their manifestos, to help you get a better idea of where Scottish politicians stood with regard to LGBT equality.

We welcome the fact the SNP, now in office in Scotland, made a commitment in their 2007 election manifesto to tackle homophobic bullying in shcools, and introduce specific legislation to tackle anti-gay hate crime. Since they came into power, an SNP spokesperson has given further assurances that the the government will be addressing the issue of homophobic at crime at the next possible opportunity.
