The UK’s leading conference on lesbian, gay, bi and trans (LGBT) inclusion in primary schools, secondary schools, services, colleges and youth groups returns this year with its unique combination of practical training, keynote speakers and platforming of youth voices.

This year we've got an LGBT leadership stream, which you can join if you're an LGBT educator at any stage of your career. Book your place today.

With a range of workshops on topics such as championing youth voice, creating an inclusive curriculum, engaging parents and carers, trans inclusion and more, this event is a great opportunity to receive a full day of CPD certified training on specialised areas of LGBT inclusion. This year we will also be launching our Mental Health and Wellbeing programme.

We have some exciting keynote speakers, including Amanda Spielman, Ofsted's Chief Inspector. This will be a chance to share ways of making education and youth services truly LGBT inclusive at every level and to network with peers, students, colleagues and experts. This conference is certified by the CPD Certification Service.

Why attend?

We know from our School Report (2017) that nearly half of lesbian, gay, bi and trans pupils (45 per cent) – including 64 per cent of trans pupils – are bullied for being LGBT at school. However, LGBT pupils are less likely to experience homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying in schools which are proactive in their approach to LGBT inclusion. LGBT pupils in these schools are also more likely to report feeling safe, welcome and happy at school. The Stonewall Teachers’ Report (2014) indicated that children often experience homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying regardless of whether they’re LGBT or not, so your work on creating an LGBT inclusive school will benefit all children.

This is a unique opportunity to take part in an event that brings together hundreds of education professionals, Children and Young People’s (CYP) services, and young people to promote and celebrate best practice in LGBT inclusion.

You will get a chance to:

  • Learn more about LGBT inclusion by selecting from a wide range of CPD-accredited workshops to create a programme tailored specifically to your areas of interest
  • Expand your network of education professionals and share examples of best practice
  • Hear from young people about their experiences and visions for LGBT inclusion in education and youth services

There’ll be a key note speech from Ofsted Chief Inspector Amanda Spielman and panel discussions with LGBT role models and professionals, and a focus on empowering and platforming youth voice.

We will also be launching two new progammes that we have been developing. 

Mental Health and Wellbeing Programme

There are an estimated 66,000 LGBT children and young people with a diagnosable mental health condition in England. Stonewall's School Report 2017 tells us that 22% of lesbian, gay and bi young people have tried to take their own life at some point, rising to 45% of young trans people.

In adulthood, we know that LGBT people are more at risk of suicidal behaviour and self-harm than non-LGBT people (LGBT in Britain (Health), 2018). This interactive workshop will look at ways to improve mental health and wellbeing outcomes for LGBT children and young people. The same workshop will be repeated on the day.

Leadership Programme

People perform better when they can be themselves and LGBT people working in education are strong and important role models for all young people. This session is a focus group designed exclusively for LGBT education professionals with leadership responsibilities or aspirations to be. In the session we'll explore authentic leadership theory, applying it to your working context and take on board feedback to shape our programme.

Keynote speakers

Amanda Spielman, Ofsted Chief Inspector

Amanda Spielman has been Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector since January 2017.

Between 2011 and 2016, Amanda was chair of Ofqual, the qualifications regulator. From 2005 she was a founding member of the leadership team at the academy chain Ark Schools, where she became Research and Policy Director and an education adviser to Ark, the education charity. She previously spent more than 15 years in strategy consulting, finance and investment at KPMG, Kleinwort Benson, Mercer Management Consulting and Nomura International

She is a council member at Brunel University London and has previously served on the boards of a number of organisations including the Institute of Education, STEMNET and Wales Millennium Centre, and has been a governor of two schools.

Youth Voice programme

Can young people attend? 

We put young people at the heart of what we do. We'll be running a separate programme - on the same day - for one hundred young people aged 14-18. Please note that our youth stream is now fully booked.

Who should I bring to the youth stream?

All young people are welcome to attend, they don’t have to identify as LGBT. In particular, we recognise from the School Report 2017 that:

Only 28 per cent of Black, Asian and minority ethnic LGBT young people have an adult at home that they can talk to about being LGBT. 

LGBT pupils who receive free school meals are more likely to be bullied for being LGBT than those who don’t (57 per cent compared to 44 per cent). 

Youth Voice Programme

As a young person, your voice and ideas are critical to creating LGBT-inclusive environments. This programme will explore how to have the greatest influence when championing inclusion. You’ll explore key areas including being an effective ally to the whole LGBT community and building a successful campaign by hearing from LGBT+ role models and discussing ideas with one another. Furthermore, you’ll work with young people from around the UK to develop advice for professionals attending the conference to ensure they are placing young people at the centre of everything they do. 

  • Understand more about being an effective ally to all members of the LGBT community

  • Learn and share ways to create effective campaigns that successfully deliver the change you want to see

  • Design best practice in collaboration with other young people to be used with professionals attending the conference

At Stonewall, we believe that all attendees should be able to fully participate in our events and feel comfortable doing so. We are taking measures and efforts to ensure that we organise events that are accessible to all. We commit to ensuring that as far as possible we work with you to accommodate any reasonable adjustments that you require. We will take feedback on access issues seriously and work to ensure that we improve and develop after every event.


The venue is wheelchair accessible. There are 3 passenger lifts and all can accommodate a wheelchair. There is free wifi available. For anyone who needs an evacuation plan, please contact to agree a mutually convenient personal evacuation plan.


Blue Badge parking is free of charge. If you do not have a blue badge you will have to pay for parking – the closest parking is a 2 minute walk from the venue. Should this make it hard for you to access the venue, please contact us. The distance between Blue Badge parking and the entrance is between 5m to 10m. Please let us know in advance if you will be using this so that we can ensure enough spaces will be available.

The forecourt (path from accessible parking spots to venue entrance) is cobbled. The pavement is lowered and there is an in-built ramp to the left of the main entrance for wheelchair access.


• When you enter the venue you will be directed from the ground floor up to the fourth floor where the event will take place.

• Registration will take place on the fourth floor; registration points are DDA compliant for wheelchair delegates.

Corridors and access routes

• The corridors/access routes have a minimum width of 1.2m in the service areas and they average 1.4 to 1.5m.

• The floors of the corridors/access routes are made of carpet and parquet.

Room layouts

The main room for opening and closing sessions:

• The rooms have level access.

• The doors are double doors, they are not automatic. There will be ushers by the doors to help you.

The networking and catering areas:

• They have a combined capacity of over 400 people.

• The rooms have level access.

• The rooms have high ceilings and many large windows.

The breakout rooms:

• Workshop rooms will have capacities of between 30 to 100 people.

• All rooms can be accessed from the main floor of the event. There will be ushers to support you in finding your workshop room.

The event will have a Quiet Room/Nurture Room & a Multi-faith Room:

• These will be available from 8.30 - 17.00.

• Changing room facilities will be available throughout the day in the venue toilets

There will be a palantypist in the keynote/ main plenary sessions.

At Registration we will provide the following additional services:

• Personal reserved signs will be available to collect at registration, on request.

• Pronoun stickers will be available.

• There will be an Early Bird registration (on request) for those who find the registration process inaccessible. More information about this will be provided at a later date. This will be followed by a short tour of the venue.

• There will be ushers available during the main registration to support delegates.

In the Networking Area colour-coded lanyards will be provided allowing delegates to indicate their levels of communication preferences.


Catering will be clearly labelled. Please do let us know of any dietary requirements or food/drink allergies you have in advance. Upon request, vegetarian, vegan, Halal, Kosher and gluten-free food will be available. We will ensure that catering requests are accommodated, so please provide us with as much information as possible when registering to attend conference.

For assistance/guide dogs, please provide a water bowl. A toilet area is not available at the venue.

Staff support

Stonewall staff will be wearing red lanyards so they can be identified easily.

An Accessibility Coordinator will be available for the day via phone and email to accommodate any access issues you might have. They will be stationed at registration but will be able to move around the venue on the day. Further information about this individual will be communicated to you nearer the day of conference. There will be Access Champions on hand supporting the Coordinator.


To ensure the safety of all delegates, everyone must bring a form of ID and a copy of their joining instructions with them in order to access the event. We accept a variety of forms of ID including government issued photo ID, bank cards or a pass from your organisation. Random bag checks may also be in operation at the entrance of the venue.
