Student mental health nurse
My name is Roch, I’m 29, and I'm a transgender man.
Right now, the only role for trans people seems to be as murder victims. That, or we’re somehow all perverts who are endangering people’s safety. And that’s wildly inaccurate.
Some studies show that 89% of trans participants have thought about committing suicide. We need role models to show that we can be other types of statistics
Some studies show that 89% of trans participants have thought about committing suicide. I’m part of that statistic. I never thought I'd live past 27. I saw no future for myself as a woman and it's because I wasn't a woman. We need role models to show that we can be other types of statistics – that we can be happy, that we can be successful, that we can be loved. We can become anything we want.
I'm a student mental health nurse and the focus of my interest is supporting trans people with mental health problems. When I qualify I want to work with children and young people, to help empower them to live their lives to their fullest potential.
You are the only person who has to spend the whole of your life with yourself. You have to do what fulfils you and makes you happy. You have to do what makes sense to you. I came out a week before my 28th birthday, and I know so many people who have transitioned later in life.
I want people to know that being trans isn't a problem, flaw or a mistake - it's just one facet of life.
I want people to know that being trans isn't a problem, flaw or a mistake - it's just one facet of life. You may not have people immediately around you who understand or accept it. But happiness is possible, and you deserve to have it.
There's a quote that says "As we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."
