FAQs

What is a legacy gift?

A legacy gift is a specific item or donation left in a will.

Do I really need a will?

Having a will is the best way of ensuring that your wishes are carried out and is a way of providing for the people and causes you care about.

What type of gifts can you leave in your will?

Residuary: A residuary legacy is a percentage of what remains of your estate once your loved ones have been provided for and any debts or expenses have been deducted

Pecuniary: This is a gift of a specified sum of money of your choosing.

Specific: This is a gift of a specific item, such as a piece of jewellery, an antique or a property.

Reversionary: This is a gift you leave to someone for a set period, before it passes to another beneficiary. For example, you may wish for a loved one to live in your house for their lifetime, before it is left to charity when they pass away.

What is Inheritance Tax and how does it affect me?

Inheritance Tax (IHT) is a tax that is charged on the portion of your estate that exceeds a certain level at the time of your death.

Any gifts left to charities, including Stonewall, are exempt from Inheritance Tax – so including a charitable gift can sometimes help reduce the tax on your estate. But Inheritance Tax is a complex and often-changing area of law, so we advise you visit the government site for the latest information.

What if I want to change something?

It’s important to regularly review your will, to take into account any changes in your life and to Inheritance Tax rules. If you’ve already made a will, it’s easy to add a gift to a charity. You can update your will using our provider Octopus Legacy.
