Scotland Workplace Conference 2023 Programme

After nearly four years, we are thrilled to announce the return of Stonewall Scotland’s Workplace Conference!

Thursday 21 September 2023 | Edinburgh International Conference Centre

We know that people are at the heart of inclusive workplaces. Our Workplace Conferences are Europe’s leading events for LGBTQ+ inclusion, offering a unique opportunity to hear from experts and leaders in equality, diversity & inclusion (EDI), and professionals committed to creating workplaces where LGBTQ+ people are free to be themselves.

Join us at the prestigious Edinburgh International Conference Centre on 21 September 2023 to learn and share the latest best practice to create a truly inclusive workplace.

From nurturing LGBTQ+ talent, to building network groups, to empowering allies, our work is collective.

Together, we’ll explore how you support everyone in our community to thrive at work.

We’ll also explore how to build allyship. How we bring everyone in to play their part in creating the workplaces we want to see.

Programme Deep Dive

Workshops A and C

Delivering inclusion on a budget

Both at home and at work we’re experiencing rising costs and falling budgets. In this workshop we’ll explore strategies to deliver impactful work with limited resources as well as how to advocate for the importance of inclusion work when resources are allocated.

  • Explore how to identify and implement low-cost, high impact inclusion activities
  • Hear from other organisations on how they’ve delivered innovative work with limited resources
  • Discuss how to advocate for inclusion work in order to maintain and increase resources

Advocating for trans inclusion

Creating a trans inclusive workplace requires sustained support and action from people across your organisation. In this session we’ll explore how you can effectively advocate for this work and engage other people to support it.

  • Discuss how to engage everyone in creating a trans inclusive workplace
  • Explore strategies to advocate for trans inclusion with different stakeholders in your organisation
  • Hear from other organisations about how to build a culture of trans allyship at work

Creating change as a network group

Network groups can be a huge force for change within an organisation. In this workshop we’ll explore how you can make the most of your influence in order to advocate for a more inclusive workplace on behalf of your members.

  • Understand more about the role of network groups in an organisation’s LGBTQ+ inclusion work
  • Explore how to leverage your influence as a network group to create real change in the organisation
  • Discuss how to challenge your organisation to improve LGBTQ+ inclusion

Inclusion in the employee lifecycle

From their first interactions with workplaces, it is important that everyone feels welcome. In this workshop we’ll explore how you can integrate LGBTQ+ inclusion into your employee journey from the moment someone applies to a role.

  • Understand more about the importance of LGBTQ+ inclusion in the employee lifecycle
  • Explore actions to embed LGBTQ+ inclusion into your existing processes
  • Discuss strategies to overcome common barriers

Building effective allies programmes

Allies are critical in your inclusion work, but it can be challenging to mobilise and motivate them as a group. In this workshop we’ll explore how you can build effective programmes of support and guidance that ensure effective and long-term engagement from larger groups of allies.

  • Understand more about how allies can advance your LGBTQ+ inclusion work
  • Discuss how to build an allies programme that enables meaningful engagement
  • Explore how to evaluate and further develop your allies programme long-term

Workshop B

LGBTQ+ Mental Health Support – Delivered by LGBT Health and Wellbeing

Organisations have a critical role to play in supporting their staff’s mental health. However, as LGBTQ+ people are disproportionately impacted by poor mental health and are often not getting the support they need from mainstream services. In this workshop, led by LGBT Health and Wellbeing, we’ll explore how organisations can provide more inclusive mental health support for the LGBTQ+ community.

  • Understand more about mental health and wellbeing among the LGBTQ+ community
  • Explore how to have more inclusive conversations about mental health and wellbeing
  • Discuss how you can ensure that you’re providing both inclusive and specific mental health support at work

Amplifying Power and Voice by Collaboration – Delivered by Trans in the City

Working collaboratively across organisations, industries and sectors increases our power to affect change and amplifies our voices far wider. In this workshop, led by Bobbi Pickard and the team from Trans in the City, we’ll explore how to build connections and share resources across organisations in order to empower trans and non-binary people and create more trans-inclusive workplaces.

  • Learn more about the work of Trans in the City
  • Explore what effective collaboration between organisations can look like
  • Discuss how you can work collaboratively to improve trans inclusion at work

Empowering Workplaces to Tackle Hate

Across Europe we’re seeing an increase in recorded anti-LGBTQ+ hate crime and a lack of accessible support for survivors. We’ve been working with partners to tackle this, including through our You Are Heard reporting platform in the Western Balkans, police sensitisation work in eastern Europe, and through the recent launch of Zoteria, an app that empowers the LGBTQ+ community and our allies to tackle hate incidents, created in partnership with Vodafone Foundation and Galop. In this workshop you’ll learn more about how to empower and support your workforce around anti-LGBTQ+ hate.

  • Learn more about how rising reported hate incidents are impacting the community
  • Explore the support that is available, including reporting options, and how you can promote this at work
  • Understand more about how organisations can effectively collaborate with civil society to address anti-LGBTQ+ hate
